The idea for Makeovers from the Heart was born in 2014. Citywide Home Loans has been in the mortgage business in Utah since 1998 and, in recent years, the company has grown dramatically. From just over 100 employees in 2010 to over 600 today, the company has closed over 7,000 home loans for their borrowers in 2014 and that number will be over 9,000 in 2015.
As the company grew, so did the annual Christmas party—from a small casual event in the office, to much bigger and more extravagant venues. In mid 2014, when it was time to start planning the 2014 Citywide Christmas party, something felt off for Steve Goorman, Founder and President, and CEO Teresa Whitehead. While previous years’ parties were fun and appreciated by the employees, they seemed out of place. They seemed a little over the top and ungrounded.
So, in 2014, Citywide went with a low-key lunch for their Utah employees and with the remaining money that was traditionally set aside for a bigger Christmas event, Citywide decided to do home makeovers for two deserving Wasatch Front families. Citywide gathered essays from families in need. Some essays were directly from the families. Others were essays nominating deserving families. Out of over 800 essays, two families were selected.
Meet the Burt family. At the end of February this year, David and his wife Ranae’s house burned down. Insurance funds were only able to support the build of a much smaller home in its place, and not enough to help with appliances or other necessitates. David is a disabled veteran and his wife is wheel chair bound. They care for four adorable dogs. We helped them finish their new home, complete with new flooring, cabinetry, and appliances.
The Goulds are a family of six from Magna. The parents are Kris & Emily. They have four kids Alexis (15), Cam (13), Olivia (10) and Aleah (8). This summer, the Goulds were a normal Utah family. That all changed on September 11th. Alexis collapsed after performing with the Cyprus High School drill team. She was taken to the hospital and diagnosed with stage 3, Neuroblastoma cancer. She’s currently undergoing chemotherapy at Primary Children’s Hospital. It’s a long road. She has lost all of her hair and a lot of weight, but she has an amazingly strong spirit and smile. She lights up a room.
